Family Piece

Welcome! Today I am sharing my Mother In Law's dresser which I am assuming is from the early 1900's.  Since we moved a year ago to our condo we have had this piece down in our storage unit. It took me one year to convince my Sweetie that I should paint this piece. We brought it up into the Dining room so I could store some of my vintage linens in it and I am now thinking I don't want to paint it. It is in rough shape for sure but it goes so nicely with the other woods in the room. I am sure it will not escape the paint brush or stain refinishing for very long but for now she will stay as she is until I can make up my mind.

I love the decorative handles!

Some of my tarnished pieces have made their way onto her top. I sure struggle with the look of tarnished silver. I love the look but when I do finally polish it I love that look as well.

The toile runner I have sewn for the top is one of my favourite fabrics and I have used it to cover the seats of chairs as well as new covering for a few small stools.

This is one of my treasures we picked up in Victoria B.C. and I love it for serving iced tea.

The three pictures below are by the artist Jan Korthals who was born in 1916 and lived in Holland until his death in 1973. I am drawn to his art and have five larger pieces of Paris & area.

These three pictures are of Delft, Amsterdam & Nymegen in the Netherlands. We are hoping to visit The Netherlands for a month in 2013 so we are really looking forward to finding some more treasures while we are there.

I hope you enjoyed your visit today! Thank you for stopping in...

Blessings,

Wanda

  1. I'm always anxious to see the beautiful pieces that you chose to keep when you moved Wanda. You have such wonderful style. I know what you mean about tarnished silver...it is lovely both ways. I just know how much time I save by loving it tarnished : )

  4. Wow Wanda, you are an admirer of Jan Korthals!!! My parents had an oil painting presenting the Skinny Bridge in Amsterdam. I have a whole pile of pictures from a Korthals calendar. I love his style of drawing and painting.
Your dresser would get a completely new look if you painted it, but I would not know what to do myself: I so love wood .... and the era it represents.
The jug is very similar to one I have, the form is exactly the same, but mine is overall more abstract, very few details and ribbon like glass. Silverstamps all over it, on the inside of course. It belonged to my greatgrandmother, so it is late 1800, beginning 1900.
Make sure to contact me (les3jardins@gmail.com)when you head for Amsterdam next year. It would be so much fun to show you our tremendous environment, which is at an armlength from Amsterdam. But also to help Kirk with his history search.
Thanks for your comment on 'de Utrecht'. Who knows I could show you her too? Her base is Muiden, near Amsterdam, in the summer.
When you have a minute drop me a line in the mail.
    Happy day,
    Jacoba

  5. Hi Wanda,

Just read your comment on my blog. I am so glad you managed to find someone in Holland to exchange houses with. I hope you will love Holland! We have so many beautiful towns and the beach is wonderful too.

Your mother in laws dresser is very pretty. I can imagine you are thinking of giving a layer of paint. I would like to paint the dresser in my garden house too, but like you I find it difficult to decide what colour it will be.

    Have a lovely day,

  6. Hi Wanda,

I love the beautiful dresser and love the sweet handles. It is hard whether to paint or not. I am often reminded of Antiques Roadshow where the furniture that they are appraising would be worth so much more, if it was just left as is.

    Happy week
    Hugs
    Carolyn

  9. Hi wanda,
thank you for your visit and lovely comment.
your dresser is fabulous. She's got amazing details.
I love my silver to be tarnished. I know this may sound foolish but I simply adore the patina so much better than polished silver.
    have a great week
